BELLEFONTAINE AND SURROUNDINGS

Nestling between mountain and sea, the village of Bellefontaine on the northern coast of the Caribbean has been independent since 1960. It’s an authentic Martinique fishing village with gumtrees lining the beach, narrow, sloping streets and a tangle of fishermen’s cottages  The seine fishing here is a must-see. When the fishing boats come in from Miquelon, big fish (tuna and marlin), caught 100 miles off the coast, are sold on the spot.

One of the village’s curiosities is the Torgiléo, a house shaped like the prow of a banana boat, with a long established restaurant. Over in le Verrier you’ll also find the church of Saint Pierre, with its inside-out belltower and its metal sculptures.

It was here in Bellefontaine that the painter Jules Marillac decided to spend his last years. His works embellish town halls throughout Martinique.
